Course Overview

Implemented to adequately prepare new drivers for obtaining a full Class 1A license and developing a comprehensive understanding of the industry, mandatory training is a crucial component. The MELT course is designed to cover all SGI-mandated requirements for mandatory training. The duration of the course ensures that students not only meet but exceed the necessary minimum hours for in-cab training, in-yard activities, and module work, thus fulfilling the in-class requirements. Practical instruction at Thunder maintains a 2:1 student-to-unit ratio, enabling students to both observe and operate the equipment, potentially surpassing the minimum hours.

The training offers the flexibility of choosing between standard or automatic transmissions. However, opting for training in automatic transmissions and testing with SGI results in a restriction to driving automatic transmission vehicles exclusively. Throughout the course, the use of the truck and trailer for training and testing is provided to the students.

To successfully complete the training, students must achieve a passing grade of 80% for all module work and competencies in each training section. Testing is scheduled after hours and is contingent upon meeting SGI's regulations for passing grades. The tuition fees cover two road exams, and if a student requires a third test, additional charges will apply for the exam and the use of the equipment.
